These young minds are environment focused: Green is the colour!

The RVCE Solar Car Team – RVSCT is an organisation like none other. The organisation established in 2013 is run by a bunch of 25 dedicated students who share the same passion. The focus is to designs and builds Solar Electric Vehicles with an aim to tackle the rising global energy crisis, envisioning the world with sustainable transportation. The project is interdisciplinary, with students from engineering backgrounds including Mechanical, Electrical, Computer science and Chemical engineering.

The team wants to advocate the use of solar energy in transportation. Apart from this it also wants to drive research and innovation into solar technology. By building highly efficient solar cars the team not only wants to showcase India’s potential on a global platform, but also inspire the youth of the nation to think green. The racing car Soleblaze is trying to make the world know the power of solar energy when applied to cars.

“We take pride in making note that we were the only team from India to take part in the World Solar Challenge 2015. In the previous cycle we had the support of various companies such as Infosys, Wipro, Schneider Electric, TCS, Sunedison and many more. Also, Mr. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys and Mr. Chetan Maini, founder of Mahindra Reva were our mentors! In this cycle we have successfully collaborated with *IBM, Wipro, Keysight, Sunpower, Tata Advanced Materials Limited, Innominds for their technical assistance in our venture. We will be incorporating IBM’s cloud computing services, Innominds embedded system and Sunpower is sponsoring us with their high-efficiency solar cells (22.4%). We need the support of various companies in order to make this a grand success in making India’s most advanced solar electric vehicle. ”, says a team member.

The solar car has the following:

The solar car comprises features like Ackermann steering geometry, lithium ion batteries, a solar collector, a motor and telemetry. A Battery Management System is also incorporated so that cells aren’t operated outside the nominal ranges.

The Solar Collector collects the solar irradiation and converts it into electrical energy through the use of photovoltaic (PV) cells. The motor converts electrical energy into the rotational energy used to run the car. Telemetry collects data from multiple sensors in the car, processes the required information onboard, and transmits the required data to or the internet.

Budget 2016-17

The race:

Represented India at World Solar Challenge Australia 2015, becoming only the second team from India to take on this challenge. The team was one of the few, to clear static scrutineering in the first attempt. Received applause from several, for our courage to dream big work hard and achieve!

The WORLD SOLAR CHALLENGE 2017 is a 3000 km cross continent race, held in Australia between 8th and 15th October 2017. It is the biggest racing event of the International Solar car Federation (ISF). The race attracts worldwide media coverage. Our team will be competing with teams from top universities including MIT, Stanford, Michigan, Cambridge, TU Delft, Tokai etc., to build the fastest, most reliable and efficient solar car, capable of crossing the Australian Outback. The World Solar Challenge rules and regulations were inspired by the original idea that a 1000 Watt car could complete the journey from Darwin to Adelaide in 50 hours. Ten percent of that energy projection is allotted to solar cars in the challenge: 5 kilowatt hours of stored energy per charge. The Challenge encourages the development of the world’s most efficient electric vehicles technologies, pushing teams to maximize the power in every charge, source energy from the sun, and recover kinetic energy from the vehicle itself.  The WSC tests team’s ingenuity, teamwork, engineering prowess, and ability to expertly balance their car’s battery level and solar array input. Successful teams will cross the finish line having completed the race on pure solar energy.
