Most entrepreneurs who begin their journey towards realising their ‘big dream’ usually tend to start working with such single-minded focus that anything other than work, even personal goals, suddenly seem like distractions.
What they don’t realise is that to lead a wholesome life, it is important that they learn to define that fine line between work and personal life and enjoy the best of both worlds. Satisfaction or dissatisfaction on any one front automatically impacts all other aspects of your life, so it is only wise to align your personal and professional goals and make life more meaningful in more ways than one.
Look at any successful entrepreneur around the world. You will see that not only are they successful at work, but lead equally fulfilling lives on the personal front. You might wonder how they get the time to socialise, pursue their fitness goals, watch movies or vacation with their families etc. in the midst of the enormous workload. Well, that’s because they are good at prioritising.
Successful entrepreneurs not only get their priorities right at work but also fit in their personal goals along with their professional goals, so they can maintain harmony in both aspects of their lives. They understand that realisation of personal goals and professional goals is interdependent and that success on one front doesn’t or shouldn’t come at the cost of the other.
Yes, entrepreneurship is hard work. But there is more to life than just work. Unless you maintain a balance between your personal and professional goals, you can’t really achieve that state of satisfaction or contentment that you always seek. Moreover, too much focus only on work can result in a monotony setting and eventually lead to exhaustion or burnout. This is a vicious cycle and is the first step towards getting burnt out. Taking out time to destress can help break the monotony and come back with more vigor to keep you going for a longer time.
Moreover, you need to realize that there could be many activities that you could be doing everyday for the sake of your startup, but they do not really have a significant impact on your startup. However, you still do them, simply because you see other entrepreneurs doing it. So, it’s time to evaluate how you spend everyday, and cut out the things that are not proving very fruitful in terms of efforts vs. returns.
Rather, it’s important to work smart and see what works for you. That way you could save time by focusing only on the top 2-3 things that yield maximum returns for your business and use the time you save to accomplish your personal goals, be it spending time with family or learning a new hobby. These are the things that’ll actually keep you sane through all the madness that entrepreneurship entails.
Remember, your body is not too different from any machine. Some basic principles apply to it too. Increasing the pace of your activities at a breakneck speed is not advisable. Like any machine, you need to ramp things up gradually. Quitting a comfortable 9-5 job and working from 8-10 immediately is bound to make you fall sick as you body is not equipped to handle the sudden changes.
So, you need to warm yourself up slowly. Keeping adequate personal time in between is important as that is the coolant that your body’s engine needs. Just like a car which will break down sometime if you just keep it running, even your body will break down if you just keep on working non-stop. The key point here is we all must respect our body’s boundaries and work accordingly.
Who says becoming a successful entrepreneur is all about being a workaholic? If that is the approach you believe in, it’ll not be long before you get burnt out and are compelled to slow down. And that would obviously impact the startup too. Instead, it is wiser to work at a sustainable pace and focus on your personal goals alongside so that you can bring out the best in you.
